The Vaughan Bequest of Turner Watercolours

On 25 January 1900, a resolution was passed by the Governors and Guardians of the National Gallery of Ireland which ‘gratefully accepted’ Henry Vaughan’s bequest of 31 watercolours and drawings by J.M.W. Turner RA. Vaughan was a wealthy English collector who died in 1899, aged 90. His valuable art collections were distributed among various public institutions. His prized Turner watercolours were divided between the National Galleries in London, Dublin and Edinburgh.
He was concerned for the long-term safety of the works and stipulated that they should only be shown in January and provided a cabinet for their safe storage when not on display. The Gallery undertook to ‘comply with the conditions laid down by Vaughan’s will for the management and exhibition of the drawings’ and this year’s showing continues what has become tradition much loved by visitors.

Shibari

I’ve started to recognise complete strangers…
The Abbey Theatre is proud to present new Irish writing as part of the Dublin Theatre Festival. Shibari brings together two exciting theatre artists, writer Gary Duggan and director Tom Creed, each making their Abbey debut.
In Dublin city, people are more connected than you think. It will only take something small for six lives to become entwined.
A bookshop employee
A restaurant manager
An English movie star
A sales team leader
A journalist
A Japanese florist
What binds them together?
Relationships are strained, snapped and formed in this modern-day look at life in a multi-cultural Dublin.
Shibari is Gary’s debut at the Abbey Theatre following his participation in the Abbey’s 2008 Short Play Commission Series, 20: Love.
Shibari contains strong language, partial nudity, sexual content and scenes of drug taking.

Signs Of Life Celebrites Photography Exhibition

Where are you likely to find Robbie Keane, Andrea Corr, Rachel Allen and Jedward together?! Stunning photographs of these celebrities can be found at a quirky gallery exhibition, taking place in the heart of Dublin’s Temple Bar in No Grant Gallery on 4th October- 24th October. Its Ireland’s FIRST EVER sign language celebrity photography exhibition; you can gain an insight into the beauty of the Irish sign language through the eyes of the celebrities.

"Signs of life" Exhibition features 26 Irish celebrities having a go at Ireland's third language
After a whirlwind tour of Ireland that began in Dublin a year ago and which has already taken in counties Monaghan, Mayo, Kildare and Limerick, a star-studded photography exhibition based on Irish Sign Language (ISL) is to make a welcome return to Dublin’s Temple Bar.
"Signs of life" is organised by the Irish Deaf society and features photos of 26 Irish celebrities, including footballer Robbie Keane, novelist Roddy Doyle, cook Rachel Allen, TV presenter Eamonn Holmes, musician Andrea Corr and TV3 presenter Sinead Desmond.
These photos, snapped by Deaf photographer Johnny Corcoran, provide a glimpse of the beauty of ISL through the eyes of the celebrities, who each sign a letter of the ISL alphabet.
The aim of the exhibition is to encourage public awareness and appreciation of one of only two unique lrish languages. ISL is the native language of the Irish Deaf Community and is used everyday by more than 40,000 people.
Commenting on the exhibition, Kevin Mulqueen, Chairperson of the Irish Deaf Society said: “This exhibition has been a huge success since it was first shown in Temple Bar this time last year, so it gives me great pleasure to see it return to Dublin by popular demand.
“We want to raise awareness about ISL, which many people are amazed to find has its own linguistic structure -- just the same as any other language. Despite its status as one of the most widely-used languages in this country, ISL is not officially recognised by the government, meaning that Deaf people struggle to access basic services in what might be their first language."
The exhibition is a FREE event open to the public at the No Grants Gallery, 12 East Essex Street, Dublin, from 4th -25th October, and all are welcome
The exhibition is educational, interactive and great fun for all. It also features a three-minute rolling video clip of celebrities signing to the camera

The Picture of Dorian Gray

I represent to you all the sins you have never had the courage to commit.
The Abbey Theatre presents Wilde’s iconic fable, especially commissioned from leading theatre-maker Neil Bartlett for the 2012 Dublin Theatre Festival.
A disturbing tale of a young man’s uncanny ability to remain both young and beautiful while descending into a life of heartless debauchery, The Picture of Dorian Gray was considered proof of both Wilde’s genius and his perversion. His scandalous best-seller of 1891 was one of the most damning pieces of evidence used against him in the trial that brought about his downfall.
This new staging of his black-hearted masterpiece brings literature’s most dangerous anti-hero back to contemporary theatrical life in Bartlett’s trademark visual, flamboyant style.
Neil Bartlett, one of Britain’s most acclaimed and original theatre-makers, returns to the Abbey Theatre following the success of the award-winning An Ideal Husband in 2008. A theatre radical, Neil Bartlett’s recent collaborations are at the forefront of international theatre making and include work with Complicite, Improbable, Lepage, Handspring (creators of Warhorse) and Artangel.
‘…Bartlett has a brilliantly contemporary understanding of Wilde’
The Irish Times
‘…an artist who can really change the way people feel’
The Observer
Please note: This play contains some strong language.

The Beatles Show

To mark the 50th anniversary of the release of Love Me Do, a mixture of short plays and the music of The Beatles performed live by Vyvienne Long and The Newspaper Taxi Men!
About the Show:

LENNON v McCARTNEY
Since the dawn of Time human beings have gathered in pubs and argued about who is greater – John Lennon or Paul McCartney. Now, finally, here at last, and not a moment too soon, is a short play that definitively sorts out the argument once and for all. Well... sort of...
LENNON v McCARTNEY was performed a number of times on the main stage at the Adelphi in Liverpool at the 2010 International Beatle Week. It has also been performed at the Scottish Beatles Weekend, the Flat Lake Festival, the Donegal Beatles Festival, the Project Arts Centre, Whelan's, the Village, and many other places.
"Fabulously written and brilliantly acted. This is an acute observation of pub culture, pop culture and male friendship." - Dublin Book Festival 2011.
Performed by Dylan McDonough and Jonathan Judge.

DEATH AND THE BEATLES FAN
How much would you know about The Beatles if your life depended on it?
DEATH AND THE BEATLES FAN is a new short play that takes a comic look at what happens when Death attempts to collect the soul of a hardcore Beatles fan who has no interest in dying.
"This really is the great stage play that The Seventh Seal could have been... if only Ingmar Bergman had been aware of The Beatles in 1957!" (Quote kindly supplied by a non-existent theatre critic.)
Performed by Dylan McDonough and Emmet Quinn.

JOHN LENNON'S LAST DAY
This piece is the most complete account of John Lennon's last day that has ever been presented. It is not a play in the traditional sense – and is probably best described as a work of 'documentary theatre'. Basically, with the use of a single actor, a simple stage set, some projected images and some very rare audio clips, this piece guides the audience through the strange and tragic events of John Lennon's last day.
"My work won't be finished till I'm dead and buried – and I hope that's a long long time."
Words spoken by John Lennon on Monday, December 8th, 1980 – just a few hours before his death.
Performed by Seamus Brennan.

VYVIENNE LONG
Vyvienne Long is a superb cellist and singer-songwriter who first came to prominence on the Irish music scene when she worked with Damien Rice on his albums O and 9. In 2006, Vyvienne released her debut EP, Birdtalk, which was a huge success and completely sold out within months. In 2010, Vyvienne reached a whole new audience when she released her excellent debut album, Caterpillar Sarabande, and appeared on television shows such as The Late Late Show, Other Voices and The View. Vyvienne has also built up an impressive reputation with her talent for covering other people’s songs – and her interpretations of The Beatles songs are nothing short of stunning.

THE NEWSPAPER TAXI MEN
The Newspaper Taxi Men are one of the very best Beatle tribute bands in Ireland. They have recently played brilliant support slots for John Lennon's Original Quarrymen at the Village and Scotland's Revolver at the Workman's Club, and Yapperhead Theatre Company are thrilled to have them as part of The Beatles Show at the New Theatre. These guys are pure quality.

Directed by Stephen Kennedy.

The Judas Kiss

The Judas Kiss
15 October 2012 - 20 October 2012
Presented by Robert Fox, Chichester Festival Theatre and Theatre Royal Bath Productions.

Hollywood star Rupert Everett plays Oscar Wilde with Freddie Fox as Lord Alfred Douglas (Bosie), in David Hare’s compelling drama about the power of all-consuming love and the cruelty of betrayal.

It is 1895 and Wilde’s masterpiece, The Importance of Being Earnest is playing in the West End after a triumphant premiere but already the wheels are in motion which will lead to his imprisonment, downfall and vilification.
Forced to make a choice between his perfidious lover, Bosie, and freedom, the ever-romantic Wilde embarks on a course towards self-destruction.

Rupert Everett has championed the work of Oscar Wilde on both stage and screen, and on both sides of the Atlantic. He shot to fame in Julian Mitchell’s play and subsequent film of Another Country. Since then, his leading screen roles have included the multi award-winning My Best Friend’s Wedding, film versions of Oscar Wilde’s The Importance of Being Earnest and An Ideal Husband, Dance with a Stranger, The Madness of King George, St Trinians and he voiced Prince Charming in Shrek.. He made his Broadway debut in 2009 in Blithe Spirit and recently starred in Pygmalion in the West End. In 2012 he will star in the BBC adaptation of Ford Madox Ford’s Parade’s End.

Playing Bosie is Freddie Fox, one of the most exciting young actors in the UK. He starred as Edwin Drood in the BBC’s adaptation of The Mystery of Edwin Drood, played Marilyn in Worried About the Boy and his West End roles include Noel Coward’s Hay Fever and Terence Rattigan’s Cause Célèbre.

For more than thirty years David Hare has been a major figure on the British and international stage. His award-winning work includes Racing Demon, Plenty, Amy’s View, Skylight, The Permanent Way and Stuff Happens and he was Oscar-nominated for The Hours and The Reader. He was the recipient of the 2011 PEN/Pinter Prize, which is awarded to a British writer of outstanding literary merit in memory of Harold Pinter.

DRAMA FROM TWO OF THE BEST – Short Plays

AFTERPLAY’ by Brian Friel and
'DESIRE, DESIRE, DESIRE' by Christopher Durang
'Afterplay' is beautifully and tenderly written and significantly adds to the Friel/Chekhov canon. Sonya and Prozorov are now middle-aged but, despite all they have experienced, have kept almost all their youthful characteristics. Sonya is still hard-working and hopelessly in love, trying to save what can be saved from the family estate in new and unkind times. Prozorov remains the indecisive boy who wants to please everybody and always fails. Strong acting and positive direction make this a fascinating piece of theatre from Balally Players. Their second offering, 'Desire, Desire, Desire' by Christopher Durang, is to Tenessee Williams what Shakespeare in Love is to the Bard, but in 20 minutes. It has references to as many plays by Williams and a legion of others as you can count. But it works perfectly on its own merits, and is a lively and entertaining piece of theatre, a fine piece of excellent storytelling.

La Esencia

Jerez Puro presents - “La Esencia”
As part of Dublin Flamenco Festival
La Esencia” is a tradition flamenco show featuring dance, singing and guitar. It is simultaneously an exploration of the deep sorrow at the heart of flamenco, and a celebr ation of the joy it can evoke. Emotion, in its purest state.
“La Esencia” is a look into the heart of a people who carry the emotion and sobriety of the Seguiriyas within them, whilst the joy of the bulerías is what is seen on the outside. Between these two extremes, they know how to find an intermediate nuance, in the same way that the greatest artists have done, such as Antonio Chacón, Manuel Torre, and La Paquera de Jerez.
“La Esencia” is like finding the promised land - created from the rhythm of the compás, a warm light, the aroma of the winery - by a diverse people who have found in flamenco a way to express life. Song, dance and musical accompaniment combine to create a Jerezano universal experience.

MARCH AWAY MY BROTHERS by Brendan McQuaile

Written and Performed by Brendan McQuaile
March Away My Brothers takes its title from a poem written in 1922 by George Chester Duggan. ‘The Watchers on Gallipoli’. Running for one night only, this production recounts the journey of a young lad, Lawrence Kelly, from Bridgefort Street in Dublin’s Liberties to the Christmas Truce in Flanders in 1914, and an impromptu meeting of soldiers from both sides, on a bitter cold Christmas Eve in an area known as ‘no man’s land’. Both the book and the show, written by Brendan McQuaile, highlight the importance of the role that music had to play in the lives of the troops at that time.. Many of the popular songs of the time are included... songs such as ‘It’s a long way to Tipperary’ and ’There’s a long long trail a winding’. Some modern reflections in song are also included.‘

Roy Chubby Brown

Roy Chubby Brown left home at 14, then lived rough until joining the merchant navy among various other jobs. Got into the working men's clubs in the 50s, first as a drummer, then evolved a comedy act.
He appeared on Opportunity Knocks in the 70s and came fourth. He then decided to 'go blue' and became one of the most foul-mouthed comics on his circuit.
His act causes offence to many, but has built up a dedicated following, even though the nature of his material has kept him off TV. Sales of his videos and audio tapes are phenomenal.

Dublin Marathon

This is the 31st year of the National Lottery Dublin Marathon, which is run through the historic Georgian streets of Dublin, Ireland's largest and capital city. Dublin is home to a quarter of the country's almost 4 million people. Though founded by the Vikings, it is now a vibrant, dynamic city where half of the population are under 25. Dublin is only an hour by air from most U.K. and European cities, and more than half of the expected entry of 10,000 will be made up of overseas runners, many of whom will be returning to sample Irish Hospitality once more.

The reaction of many thousands of spectators lining the city streets for the event has been largely responsible for the success of marathon down through the years. It's no wonder that the National Lottery Dublin Marathon is internationally known as the 'Friendly Marathon'.

So why not come and enjoy the experience of a warm and friendly welcome. The only problem is that once you have experienced it, you'll want to come back again!

Art Surpassing Nature: Dutch Landscapes in the Age of Rembrandt and Ruisdael

Opening on 29 October is Art Surpassing Nature: Dutch Landscapes in the Age of Rembrandt and Ruisdael, a display of master paintings and drawings by Dutch seventeenth-century artists such as Jacob van Ruisdael, Aelbert Cuyp, Hendrick Avercamp and Rembrandt. The exhibition will continue until 20 January 2013.

Dutch artists were the first to paint naturalistic images of their own countryside. They did not create their works outside on an easel, however. As paints needed to be prepared in the studio, artists produced their landscapes indoors with the help of sketches. They also made use of their imagination to improve on nature. Jacob van Ruisdael, for example, exaggerated the elevation of the hill in The Castle of Bentheim,1653, to make the fortress look more impressive than it is in reality.

Dutch landscapes are notable for their variety. In addition to views of Holland’s green pastures, winter scenes enjoyed considerable popularity. Such paintings allowed artists, such as Hendrick Avercamp, to depict ice skaters having fun. Some painters represented landscapes by night, as exemplified by one of Rembrandt’s nocturnal masterpieces, Landscape with the Rest on the Flight into Egypt, 1647. Others travelled abroad to paint Italy’s countryside, bathed in the golden glow of the Mediterranean sun. A handful of artists even specialised in views of Brazil, a Dutch colony at the time.

In addition to some twenty paintings, this exhibition includes highlights of the National Gallery of Ireland’s collection of seventeenth-century landscape drawings. These masterpieces on paper show the same diversity as the paintings. They range from depictions of cattle grazing near sand dunes to representations of travellers in a mountainous landscape bathed in Italian sunlight. Some of the drawings on view were made in preparation for painting or prints. Other sheets are ‘finished’ drawings, which artists sold as independent works of art.
