The Yeats Collection at the Library includes more than 2000 items, stored in 100 archival boxes, occupying 24 metres of shelf space.

Witness to War: the War of Independence and the Civil War through the lens of W.D. Hogan

The photographer WD Hogan had unique access to the events of the War of Independence and Civil War in Ireland between 1920 and 1923. Hogan had a ringside seat at many historically significant events during these years. While many critics argue that his photographs of this key period in Irish history are one-sided, they provide an undeniably powerful record nonetheless.

Discover your National Library

The Library’s new exhibition, Discover your National Library: Explore, Reflect, Connect provides a unique opportunity to view first-hand a representative selection of the Library’s holdings – the world’s largest and most comprehensive collection of Irish documentary material numbering almost eight million items including maps, prints, drawings, manuscripts, photographs, books, newspapers and periodicals.
Among the artefacts to go on display are rare manuscripts such as the Book of Maguaran dating from the Middle Ages and a deed signed by Sir Walter Raleigh. There are also curiosities such as a 1795 lottery ticket (we don’t know if it won), and more contemporary items such as a set of cigarette cards illustrated by Jack Yeats from the 1920s.
Throughout, the exhibition makes extensive use of digital media, with special features including a series of screened talks by the Library’s curators. One of the most popular features is an interactive table using Microsoft Silverlight technology, which enables the visitor to zoom in on images of objects from the collections which can be seen in amazing detail.

R Kelly

. Kelly, the three-time Grammy winning king of R&B, makes music of epic proportions. After 18 years of stardom, the multi-instrumentalist, producer and vocalist continues to forge an artistic path that caters to fantasy and captures the hearts of adoring fans, which is in essence, how an artist sells over 34 million records, and wears the crown of a king.

The charts are telling of the Chicago native’s storied success— six #1 albums, 11 #1 singles, and 12 consecutive platinum albums. Yet, beyond the numbers is his vital contribution to the soul music continuum. R. Kelly’s musical tome is ripe with scintillating delivery and stirring rhythms that outlast thinner melodies by fleeting one-hit sensations. In one moment, he is the virtuoso that delves into slow, deep delicious seduction, and the next finds him the sexy showman at the center of the party, in full body-rocking up-tempo flavor. From the tantalizing eight-times platinum R. to the Grammy-award winning anthem “I Believe I Can Fly,” to his hit single “I’m a Flirt” with Bow Wow that garnered a 2008 ASCAP Rhythm and Soul Music Award, R. Kelly is the essence of true R&B.

The Darkest Corner - James X

A series of presentations that shine a light into ‘the darkest corner of the history of the State’.

In May of last year the high court judge Sean Ryan finally revealed the 2,600-page report of Ireland’s Commission to Inquire into Child Abuse (commonly known as the Ryan Report).

In responding to the report, Taoiseach Brian Cowen claimed it shone a powerful light into ‘the darkest corner of the history of the State’. Under the title, The Darkest Corner, we present a series of powerful work which both remembers the findings and reflects on the systemic abuse revealed within state-funded and regulated institutions.

The Farcry productions presentation of James X written and performed by Gerard Mannix Flynn concludes The Darkest Corner series.

James X is ‘… an account of life literally from the womb, and of the tribulations that beset a child’s passage through a country that is portrayed as grim, authoritarian and deeply prejudiced against him and his kind’. Bruce Arnold.
