Discover your National Library

The Library’s new exhibition, Discover your National Library: Explore, Reflect, Connect provides a unique opportunity to view first-hand a representative selection of the Library’s holdings – the world’s largest and most comprehensive collection of Irish documentary material numbering almost eight million items including maps, prints, drawings, manuscripts, photographs, books, newspapers and periodicals.
Among the artefacts to go on display are rare manuscripts such as the Book of Maguaran dating from the Middle Ages and a deed signed by Sir Walter Raleigh. There are also curiosities such as a 1795 lottery ticket (we don’t know if it won), and more contemporary items such as a set of cigarette cards illustrated by Jack Yeats from the 1920s.
Throughout, the exhibition makes extensive use of digital media, with special features including a series of screened talks by the Library’s curators. One of the most popular features is an interactive table using Microsoft Silverlight technology, which enables the visitor to zoom in on images of objects from the collections which can be seen in amazing detail.

Brendan Grace

It’s a funny old world when seen through the eyes of Brendan Grace. The sanctimonious priest who knows more than he’s telling. Then there’s the schoolboy with the unspeakable personal habits and a fine line in sympathy pleas. Brendan Grace is all of these and more. Each cock- eyed portrait he paints has a ring of truth that brings audiences to the point of apoplexy. Brendan’s material owes more to the best of the traditional stand-up-comics than it does to modern alternative humour and his show is very much a show for all the family. There is a sincerity about his act that endears you to him, and his off-stage persona is very much a ‘man of the people’ as he makes himself available after each show for a photo and a ‘meet and agreet’. Brendan’s first visit to the Mill Theatre will be a sell-out so early booking advisable.

Dublin Dance Festival

Dublin Dance Festival is delighted to announce that it will present another world-class and diverse programme of contemporary dance in Ireland’s capital city in 2010.
The centrepiece of the 2010 festival will be by influential German choreographer Raimund Hoghe, whose work, Young People, Old Voices, is the inspiration for the core theme of the programme. With the recent deaths of 20th century dance icons Merce Cunningham - who performed until his 70s - and Pina Bausch, we are in the midst of a generational shift in contemporary dance. Who and what defines age? How much is numerical, how much attitudinal? How are youth and age reflected in dance, onstage and in the studio? An additional strand will take into account the inclusivity of dance – body types and abilities as well as chronological age.

The Festival is also delighted to announce the return of Jean Butler and Tere O’Connor, working together for the first time with a commission from the Abbey Theatre
